Roof-mount racking (composition shingle)
The dominant residential application. Lag bolts go through shingles into rafters, sealed with a flashed mount, with rails on top to clamp panels.
IronRidge
Products: XR Rails (XR10/XR100/XR1000) + FlashFoot 2 mount + Halo UltraGrip clamps. The most-installed residential rail system in the US. Compatible with virtually every panel.
Strengths: Universal compatibility, strong installer ecosystem, US-manufactured, certified for high snow-load and high-wind regions. Mature engineering — well-documented load tables.
Watch for: Standard FlashFoot uses an EPDM gasket — works fine on asphalt shingles, marginal on tile or metal. Use SunRoof / specialty mount for non-shingle roofs.
Unirac
Products: SOLARMOUNT (rail-based) + RM (rail-less for flat roofs) + NXT UMOUNT for residential roof mount. SolarHooks variants for tile and metal roofs.
Strengths: Long-running US installer; SolarMount has been on roofs since 2002 with strong field history. Strong commercial product line crosses over to residential.
Watch for: SolarMount classic uses non-flashed L-feet on some installs — that's a leak risk over time. Insist on the flashed FlashLoc or hybrid FlashLoc Adjustable for 30-year roof integrity.
SnapNrack
Products: Series 100 (rail-based) + Series 200 (rail-less). Speed Sealed flashings. Sunrun-affiliated (Sunrun owns SnapNrack).
Strengths: Speed Sealed flashing system is well-engineered — integrated waterproofing without separate mastic. Common in Sunrun lease installs nationwide.
Watch for: Quality control varies during high-volume installer use. Inspect penetrations carefully if you bought a lease/PPA system.
Quick Mount PV (Esdec)
Products: Premium flashed mounts — Classic Composition Mount, Conklin Cap, Tile Hooks. Now part of Esdec (also owns EcoFasten).
Strengths: The premium flashed mount — widely considered the gold standard for residential roof penetrations. Real metal flashing (not just gasket) under the shingle. Lower long-term leak rate than rubber-gasket alternatives.
Watch for: Higher cost than IronRidge FlashFoot. Worth the premium if your roof is high-pitch or high-rainfall climate.
EcoFasten (Esdec)
Products: Rock-It System (rails + GreenFasten flashing) for asphalt shingle. Tile and metal-roof variants. Now part of Esdec.
Strengths: Premium flashed mount with engineered waterproofing layers. Strong VT/Northeast cold-climate engineering.
S-5! (metal-roof specialist)
Products: Standing-seam metal-roof clamps (S-5-N, S-5-PV) that attach to the rib of a metal roof without penetrating it. Brackets for corrugated and exposed-fastener metal roofs.
Strengths: The dominant solution for metal roofs. Non-penetrating clamps eliminate the leak risk entirely. Lifetime warranty on most clamps. Compatible with virtually every metal-roof profile.
Watch for: Only useful on metal roofs — not relevant for asphalt-shingle homes.
SunModo
Products: NanoMount (rail-less) + EZ Roof Mount (rail-based). Roof + ground racking + carport racking.
Strengths: Diverse product line covering rooftop + ground-mount + commercial carport. Pacific Northwest-engineered for wet climates.
Pegasus / Roof Tech
Products: RT-MINI rail-less mount with butyl waterproofing layer. Distinctive small-footprint mount for asphalt shingle.
Strengths: Elegant rail-less design with butyl rubber sealing layer. Popular on aesthetic-conscious installs.
Watch for: Roof-Tech (Pegasus) is a Japanese parent company. Verify FEOC compliance for 48E-claiming projects.
Ballasted flat-roof racking (commercial & flat-roof residential)
For flat or low-slope roofs (commercial, some modern residential), arrays sit on weighted ballast trays without penetrating the roof membrane. Critical for warranty preservation on TPO/EPDM commercial roofs.
Ecolibrium Solar (Esdec) — EcoX
Products: EcoX ballasted system with engineered tilts (5°, 10°, 15°, 20°). Wind-tunnel tested.
Strengths: Industry-standard ballasted product. Compatible with most commercial roof types.
PanelClaw (Anvil)
Products: Polar Bear Series (5°, 10°) ballasted commercial racking. Penguin Series for east-west arrays.
Strengths: Strong commercial reputation. Pre-engineered ballast layouts for major roof types.
RBI Solar (Gibraltar Industries)
Products: Ballasted flat-roof, ground-mount, and carport racking. Custom engineered designs for commercial scale.
Strengths: US-HQ commercial-grade racking. Strong engineering team for site-specific designs.
Unirac RM & RM10
Products: RM Series ballasted flat-roof — fully engineered ballast layouts. Common in commercial Sun Belt markets.
Ground-mount racking
For homes with yard space or land, ground mounts often beat rooftop on production (perfect tilt + airflow cooling) and avoid the roof altogether. Two structural categories: foundation-driven (concrete or driven posts) and ballasted (no holes, weighted).
IronRidge Ground Mount
Products: Ground Mount System (GMS) and Foundations — concrete pier or driven post. Standard 6–9 panels per pier configuration.
Strengths: Same engineering quality as IronRidge rooftop. Modular — can build any size from 4 to 200+ panels.
SunModo Ground Mount
Products: Sunmodo Ground Mount — pole or driven post. Cost-competitive small-system option.
Nuance Energy — Osprey PowerPlatform
Products: Osprey ground-mount — fully ballasted (no concrete, no driven piers). Innovative for flat sites where concrete excavation is expensive or impractical.
Strengths: Fast install (no concrete cure time). Removable / reusable — useful for leased land. Engineered for snow + wind loads up to specific thresholds.
Watch for: Site soil and slope must be verified by their engineering team. Not for steeply graded yards.
RBI Solar Ground Mount
Products: Driven-post and concrete-pier ground mount + carports + canopies. Commercial-scale specialty.
Schletter / Solar FlexRack / Terrasmart (utility-scale)
Products: Tracker and fixed-tilt utility-scale systems. Generally not residential — relevant if you're building a 1+ MW agricultural or commercial array.

What to ask any installer about racking
- "What racking brand and product line are you specifying?" Get the exact product (e.g. "IronRidge XR Rails + FlashFoot 2" not just "IronRidge").
- "What's the flashing system?" The flashing — NOT just the rail — is what determines roof-leak risk. Premium = real metal flashing (Quick Mount, EcoFasten). Budget = EPDM rubber gasket (still acceptable but lower margin).
- "What's the warranty on the flashing specifically?" The rail warranty is meaningless if the flashing leaks. Best brands give 20–25 years on the flashing.
- "Is this FEOC compliant?" If you're buying through a lease/PPA (claiming Section 48E), the racking must be FEOC compliant. See our FEOC compliant parts list.
- "Who's responsible if there's a roof leak at a penetration in year 5?" The installer's roof-leak warranty is what really matters — the manufacturer's flashing warranty backstops this but the installer is your first call. Get this in writing.
- "For metal roofs: Are you using S-5! clamps (no penetration) or hex-driver brackets (penetrating)?" Non-penetrating clamps eliminate the leak risk entirely.
- "For flat roofs: Is this ballasted or anchored? What's the wind-load engineering?" Ballasted = no roof penetration but has weight implications for the roof structure.
Frequently asked questions
How long does racking last?
Aluminum rails and stainless hardware should easily exceed the 25–30 year life of the panels. The wear point is the flashing/sealant where the lag bolt enters the roof — premium flashed mounts have 25-year warranties; cheaper rubber-gasket mounts have a 5–10 year leak-free life depending on climate.
Can racking damage my roof?
Rarely if installed correctly. Roof leaks at penetrations are the most common failure mode — and the most preventable. Always insist on a flashed mount system (real metal flashing under the shingle, not just gasket on top). For metal roofs, use S-5! non-penetrating clamps.
Should I worry about racking when comparing bids?
Yes — ask each installer which racking brand and which flashing system. Bids that don't specify the racking are missing critical information. Bids that spec budget Chinese OEM racking are saving the installer money but transferring leak risk to you over the next 25 years.
Is ground mount more expensive than rooftop?
Ground mount adds $0.30–$0.60/W to the system cost (concrete + posts + trenching). For a typical 8 kW system that's $2,500–$5,000 more than rooftop. The trade-off: higher production from optimal tilt + airflow cooling, no roof penetrations, and you can resize/relocate if needed. Often pencils out for homes with land + bad rooftop conditions.
